After more than 20 years of helping owners and their dogs, we've learned a few things.
Some of them might surprise you.
Some might come as a relief.
And some are things we secretly wish every dog owner knew…
Shocking, I know.
We don't spend our days trying to create robots.
We want dogs that can make good choices, dogs that enjoy learning, and owners who genuinely enjoy living with them.
A little bit of personality is part of the fun.
The barkers.
The pullers.
The over-excited puppies.
The adolescent hooligans.
The dogs who can't sit still for more than two seconds.
Because underneath all that enthusiasm is usually a perfectly normal dog and an owner who simply needs some support.
The owners who apologise constantly.
The ones who say:
"I'm sorry, he's usually better than this."
"She's embarrassing me."
"You're probably judging me."
Trust us.
We're not.
In fact, the fact you're worried tells us how much you care.
That Labrador who heels perfectly off lead.
The Border Collie with flawless recall.
The Golden Retriever lying calmly in the café.
You're seeing seconds of someone's day.
Not the months or years of training that got them there.
And certainly not the chaos that happened before the camera started rolling.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is owners trying to entertain their dogs every waking moment.
Sometimes the answer isn't another walk, another game or another toy.
Sometimes it's teaching them that it's okay to switch off.
They're about helping owners.
Yes, we teach dogs.
But what we really do is help people understand their dogs, gain confidence and enjoy life together.
They're not stubborn.
They're not dominant.
They're not trying to take over the house.
They're simply dogs doing dog things.
And once owners understand that, life often becomes much easier.
Probably every day.
No dog trainer lives in a house with perfect dogs.
We forget treats.
We accidentally reinforce things we didn't mean to.
We laugh when we should probably be training.
And yes, our dogs sometimes ignore us too.
One of the saddest things we hear is:
"I wish I'd come sooner."
Classes aren't just for dogs with problems.
They're for owners who want to build confidence, understanding and a great relationship before things become difficult.
"I enjoy my dog so much more now."
Not:
"He's perfectly behaved."
Not:
"She never puts a paw wrong."
Just:
"We're having fun together again."
Because that's what it's really all about.
If you've ever found yourself thinking:
"I'd love to come, but my dog isn't ready yet…"
Please know this.
Nobody joins us because they have the perfect dog.
That's why classes exist.
Whether you're raising a puppy, navigating adolescence, looking to build confidence, improve your recall or simply have more fun together, we'd love to help.
You don't need a perfectly behaved dog.
You don't need to have everything figured out.
And you certainly don't need to apologise.
You just need to start.
Because after all these years, one thing we know for certain is this:
Dog training isn't really about creating perfect dogs.
It's about helping owners and dogs enjoy life together.
And honestly?
That's the best part of our job. ❤️
